Drivers ask
The registration document was in the car and is now gone. What does that change?
For the technical work, very little; for everything that follows, quite a lot. The report identifies the vehicle from the number stamped on the body and from the data plate, so an inspection can proceed. What becomes harder is proving who the keeper is, and that question comes up at the yard, at the border and at the insurer.
Does a lowered car get damaged differently?
It does, and mostly underneath. Less ground clearance means kerbs, ramps and speed humps reach the sills, the front spoiler and the underbody guard first. In a collision the bumper meets the other car at a different height, which shows in the pattern of the marks.
The insurer says my damage is a known manufacturing fault, not an accident. Can that be checked?
It can, and it is one of the more common disputes. A production fault and an impact leave different pictures: the fault shows uniform wear or cracking in a defined place across many vehicles, while an impact leaves direction, depth and a point of contact. The report describes which of the two the material supports.
What does animal damage under the bonnet actually look like?
A clean cut across a cable or a hose with visible tooth marks at the edge, usually in the upper part of the engine bay where the animal can stand. Insulation mats are torn rather than cut, and pieces of them are found on the engine and on the ground below.
The car has a hybrid badge but never runs on electricity. What is it?
A mild hybrid, which means a second electrical system at 48 volts that assists the petrol or diesel engine. It cannot drive the car on its own and it does not charge from a socket. For assessment purposes it is a different vehicle from a plain combustion car, because it carries a second battery and its own components.
What is different about assessing a nine-seat vehicle?
The interior is part of the structure of the claim. Seat rows, their rails and the anchor points in the floor are separate items with their own prices, and a rear impact that looks moderate from outside can reach the last row and its mountings. All of it is listed row by row.
How does assessing a motorhome differ from a car?
Base vehicle and living body are assessed separately. The body often comes from another manufacturer, with its own parts channels and long lead times. Sealing, furniture and on-board technology are added, areas that a standard vehicle calculation does not cover at all.
The car came back from the body shop and now pulls to one side. What does that mean?
It means something in the steering or suspension geometry is not where it was, and that is a measurable condition rather than a feeling. A printed alignment report before and after the work settles it in minutes. Without the printout the discussion turns into one impression against another.
